World Cup Host Cities Update: MetLife Stadium Renamed for Tournament

June 25, 2026 at 1:13 AM Wire

Due to FIFA's strict sponsorship regulations, several iconic stadiums, including MetLife, have been temporarily renamed for the 2026 World Cup.

As the 2026 World Cup reaches its peak, fans navigating the host cities are adjusting to temporary name changes for several major venues. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford has been officially renamed 'New York New Jersey Stadium' for the duration of the tournament to comply with FIFA's commercial guidelines. These rules prohibit stadiums from carrying the names of sponsors who are not official FIFA partners, ensuring a 'clean' brand environment for the world's largest sporting event.

While most stadiums followed suit, Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium has managed to retain its iconic roof logo. Removing the branding would have potentially damaged the stadium's $1.6 billion retractable roof structure, leading to a unique exception from FIFA. However, the venue is still referred to as 'Atlanta Stadium' in all official broadcasts and marketing materials to maintain consistency across the sixteen host cities.
